Uber Orders Employees Back To Office 3 Days A Week: Good 'Is Not Going To Be Good Enough,' Says CEO Dara Khosrowshahi

Uber Technologies Inc. is rescinding remote work privileges and making in-office attendance mandatory, following months of other tech giants issuing similar directives. The new development was announced internally on Monday and is part of a company-wide push to modify operations under CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

What Happened: From June, Uber employees will have to work from the office three days a week. Currently, only two days are mandatory. This rule will be applicable for workers who had previously been granted remote status. In a memo viewed by CNBC, Khosrowshahi said, “I want to emphasize that ‘good’ is not going to be good enough — we need to be great.”

Tuesday through Thursday have been designated as mandatory in-office days. The company is also phasing out most new fully remote recruits and reconsidering work-from-home arrangements it had granted earlier.

Uber did not immediately respond to Benzinga‘s request for comment.

Why It Matters: With this move, Uber’s leadership has underlined its belief that in-person work improves performance. “Being in the office fuels collaboration, sparks creativity, and increases velocity,” Khosrowshahi wrote.

Corporate giants are scaling back flexibility to manage productivity and investor apprehensions after pandemic-era overexpansion. Uber’s leadership team has said that attendance will be tracked, both at the team and individual levels.

Apart from the RTO move, Uber also changed its eligibility criteria for its one-month paid sabbatical from five to eight years of service. This decision generated speedy internal criticism. “This isn’t ‘doing the right thing’ for your employees,” one staffer posted on the company’s Q&A forum, as per CNBC. Khosrowshahi and Chief People Officer Nikki Krishnamurthy are scheduled to address employee doubts and queries concerns at an all-hands meeting on Tuesday.
